What they say?
A study from the Institute of Healthy Ageing, Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, University College London, London WC1E 6JJ, UK shows that “Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 signaling regulates mammalian life span.” This study was published, in the 2 October 2009 issue of the Journal “Science” (I.F: 31.477 ), by Prof Dominic J. Withers, Dr. Selman C and others.
What we say:
On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports, for the first time, that: Neuropeptide Y functions as a longevity-promoting agent: Neuropeptide Y (NPY), a 36 amino-acid neuropeptide that stimulates food intake, inhibits the expression of Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) and extends mammalian life span, via up regulation of its target gene
Research findings to Therapeutic opportunity:
This study provides mechanistic insights into how Neuropeptide Y (NPY) functions as a longevity-promoting agent. Neuropeptide Y (NPY), by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may suppress Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) expression. Thereby, it may promote: (1) resistance to bone, immune, and motor dysfunction; (2) insulin sensitivity; and (3) longevity (fig. 1).

Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Neuropeptide Y (NPY) or its mimics/activators, either alone or in combination with any of the known longevity-promoting compound(s),“ may be used to extend the lifespan of an individual (fig. 1). Together, this study suggests, for the first time, that consuming neuropeptide Y (NPY) activators may extend health and life span.
