Significance: This study provides, for the first time, a molecular explanation as to why there are more heart attacks during winter. Furthermore, this study has identified a gene that is responsible for poor performance of cardiomyocytes during the winter. Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Cold temperature-down regulated gene or its small molecule activator” may be used to protect one from heart attack during the winter and improve cardiac performance.
